TÌNH THƯƠNG SCHOLARSHIPS
Charity Group Affection sponsors four types of scholarships:
The first Khuyen Hoc (Tong Khuyen) scholarship
is for the grandchildren and relatives of the former teachers of Tran Quy Cap High School in Hoi An, Quang Nam, Vietnam. The scholarship recipients are selected by a committee of three former teachers at the high school, Mr. Tran Do of Hoi An, Mr. Mai Chanh Tri of Da Nang, and Mr. Nguyen Huu Ngoc of Saigon (committee head). The selection criteria are as follows: the recipient must be poor and need the scholarship to pay for books and supplies, the recipient must be a high school senior or college student in Quang Nam, and the recipient must be related to a former teacher at Tran Quy Cap High School from before 1975.
The selection committee distributes applications to the former teachers directly, who distribute them to their grandchildren and other relatives.
Depending on available funds, Charity Group Affection expects to distribute between 8 and 13 of these scholarship annually. The scholarships are $100 each , which is enough to cover books and supplies.
The second Khuyen Hoc scholarship
is for poor high school students in Vinh Long, South Vietnam. The scholarships are $50 each annually, and, depending on funds, there are 10-12 scholarships. Ms. Tra Mi Nguyen selects the scholarship recipients. She is a resident of that area and a longtime friend of Ms. Hoa Tong Le. She prepares an application form and receives and reviews applications. In their applications, applicants describe their financial condition and need. Ms. Tra Mi Nguyen picks the neediest recipients. The $50 scholarship is enough to pay for school supplies
The third Khuyen Hoc scholarship
is the Class of 1952 Hoi An High School Alumni Association scholarship for high school students in Hoi An, Quang Nam. The scholarships are $100 each, and Charity Group Affection generally funds 10 scholarships (the Alumni Association distributes more than those). The recipients must be related to members of the Hoi An High School Class of 1952, and must demonstrate academic achievement. The applications are awarded by, and recipients are selected by, the Class of 1952 Hoi An High School Alumni Association, under the direction of Dr. Le Huu Lan. Charity Group Affection does not itself award this scholarship; it distributed funds to the Class of 1952 Hoi An High School Alumni Association to support its awarding of the scholarships. The $100 scholarships are enough to pay for books and supplies.
The fourth Khuyen Hoc scholarship
is distributed through a Buddhist sister at Phap Bao Buddhist Temple in Hoi An, Ms. An Lien, to be given to poor students (14-20 years old) in the mountainous villages outside of Hoi An, Quang Nam. The scholarships are $50 each, and, in 2008, its first year supporting this scholarship, Charity Group Affection funded 12 scholarships. This Buddhist sister runs the Basic English classes that Charity Group Affection sponsors. The Buddhist sister travels among the mountainous villages to find applicants. The applicants must submit a financial report of their families, and generally, their families have undergone great hardship (losing a parent, losing land, etc.). The $50 scholarship is enough to pay for school supplies.
